On Mimes

Positive things about mimes. Hmm. did you know that mimes donate more blood, per capita, than any other profession? Or that they were instrumental in passing along secret messages for the French Resistance? Or that every mime, no matter how successful, is professionally obligated to perfom in public parks at least a dozen times a year? Or that getting beaten up is considered the highest honor a mime can recieve, because they feel that that drains just a little more aggression out of the world as a whole? The statuettes they give out at the mime oscars - the marcels - are actually little statues of a beaten and bloody mimes, as a reminder of the nobility of the sacrifice...

Twice we have been wrapped up in some kind of national drama and a catastrophe has come in from out of our collective blind spot, swept away the import of the previous discourse, and laid bare a "true" problem.  In the case of the 2012 election, Superstorm Sandy displaced the petty bickering between the two candidates, illustrating that the ongoing cataclysmic global warming is more important than any domestic squabbles.  Secondly, all the b.s. around the "fiscal cliff" (December 2012) was pushed into the background by the Newtown elementary school shooting, demonstrating the need for adequate gun control laws in the U.S.
